One Through the Vine

I take an active part in God’s plan.

This song comes from the passion of the message of Jesus in John chapter 15. There is a full-bodied message in this section of scripture where just pulling a few verses from it does not do the message the justice and the communication that it deserves.

Spend time today with the entire chapter.

Jesus tells me that He is the vine and I am a branch of the vine. What?? Jesus isn’t telling me that He is somehow separate from me, rather that I am a part of Him! I am a part of God and His plan for my life.

This concept was certainly similar to what people of the day expected of God—“sure, if we follow these laws and do these sacrifices, then maybe God will (take separate action from on high. And, oh, He doesn’t care about me …)

No! Jesus came to tell us we are in partnership with God to live our lives, and we remain in constant conversation with Him through the full-time presence of the Holy Spirit.

Read how this section begins and ends, then I invite you to read the rest in between:

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

26“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

“You chose me to honor You
To testify about the truth
And glorify Your name
Teach me how to fly and remain in the vine
Remain in the vine”

song verse

This means that the source for all my energy comes from and flows through Him! Yes, I can think of God the Father and creator as separate, maybe even Jesus himself as a human is separate, but not God through the full-time gift of the Holy Spirit! I am one with him, we are one with him through the vine.

I play an active part in the growth of my life as I stay connected to God and bear good fruit in this garden concept that Jesus so eloquently told.

Discuss and Pray

Pray for a better understanding of who I am according to God in the New Testament and the power I have in this life as a heir in the family of God.

Lord, what do You want me to hear from You about the vine? What would You like me to do about carrying out my life as I remain in the vine?

How can I actively stay connected to the will of God through the vine?

How can I be an instrument of change in my community to help others stay connected to the vine?

How has Christ’s victory over sin and death changed you, or will change you?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, how great is Your name. May Your kingdom come to earth. Lord Jesus, I am yours, you are mine, we are one through the vine.

Teach me how to bear good fruit and stay in communication with You today. Thank you for the victory over sin and death so I can live my life to the full.
