In John chapter 8, Jesus once more find himself under scrutiny and question from the religious elite. His testimony about himself is challenged. The rule of the day was that religious leaders believed testimony if it was backed up by another.
Jesus tells them that his witness is not validated by human standards, but rather by God the Father who sent him.
In verse 34, Jesus says that whoever sins is a slave to sin, but He has come to set the sinner free. These leaders are following the will of their father of lies, just as we today follow the father of lies if we refuse to hear the words of Jesus.
I Am! I Am and always will be
And do proclaim that I forever
Will hold you close to me
I Am! I Am and promise to you
We’ll always be together
Because I live in you
Before Abraham was, I Am!
— song chorus
Jesus tells them, and us today, that whoever the Son sets free will be free indeed. Of course, we are all sinners and miss the mark of what God intends for our lives. When we are free, we hear the voice of God and respond. If we remain in bondage, we listen to the voice of the father of lies.
It’s understandable how shocking this news would be for them back in the day. They were used to wielding power over their villages. For us today, we have similar concerns. Yet we have experienced much more freedom in choosing our system of faith.
We have the benefit of studying the whole of scripture to understand that God is pure love, the source and beginning of love. Jesus was Emmanuel, our God with us, and promised to be with us forever.
He left the full-time gift of the Holy Spirit to guide our lives. With all that we know about Jesus, we have undeniable testimony that He is the Lord of the universe, one with Creator God. His written testimony can now be seen as indisputable.
If Jesus claimed He was one with God and we believe the promise of Jesus that we will always live together with Him, then we will hear the voice of God and respond and must confess that Jesus is Lord of our lives.
We will never again give any time for the father of lies. We choose to be free from the shackles of sin.
So bold!
Heavenly Father, how great is Your name. May Your kingdom come to earth. Lord Jesus, how great is your witness! Let us realize your claim to king of the universe is because of the great love of Creator God, our Father, has for us. We are His reason.
Thank you for the victory over sin and death so I can live my life to the full.
