Tell the Mountain to Move

Let Go of Fear. Draw the Line.

Jesus has great encouragement for me. He tells us more than once to have the faith of a child, the dependence that a child has on their parent.

I believe that I was made in the image and likeness of God, and that He has great things in store for me. I am special. Psalm 139 says:

13For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully
made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

I am designed with the utmost care, unique in my ability to share myself with others. I have purpose. My creation is not random, it is intentional.

My being is in awe of my Creator. I was designed to connect with Him and the people around me to understand my purpose. I stay in awe of my Creator as a child, and I marvel at His works and have deep respect for life and never-ending reverence for God. I am distinct and set apart as a child of God and an heir and family member of His creation.

Even if I don’t yet know Him, I have faith in the goodness of the world He created.

“Fearfully” in this usage in means awe and reverence, heart-felt interest, and respect and is translated from the Hebrew word, “yare.”

And as I mature and learn to navigate the world, my awe can begin to diminish. The “real world” can leave scars that take away from this original awe and generate the modern-day interpretation of fear and anxiety.

Jesus refers to children a few times in recorded scripture. In the book of Matthew chapter 18:

2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child
among them.
3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless
you change and become like little children, you will
never enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 Therefore,
whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5
And whoever
welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

In Mark chapter 10:

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Tune In to Joy

He wants me to understand that I will win in this life when I tune in to hope and joy, as I remember the awe I held as a child and minimize the cares of this world. When I see His goodness and invite His ways to be my ways, and find my original state of awe, my efforts will be magnified.

The tools I have gained as an adult can be put to work with the sense of wonder I had as a child.

Matthew 13:

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

He tells me that the smallest seed of hope can become a large tree. He encourages me to find who I am in Him so I can accomplish great things, excellent things for me and my wife and the people of my community.

He loves and cares for me. He wants me to call on His name for help as a child calls on their parents to live and experience the hope of the kingdom of heaven.

We pray for the kingdom to come with every breath. I want to align myself with God and continually reach out to understand my connection with Him.

Matthew 17:

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

He tells his disciples that if they have faith the size of a mustard seed that they can command a mountain to move to the sea. Do you believe He is also telling you this?

Let go of fear and draw the line.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, how great is Your name. May Your kingdom come to earth. Lord Jesus, help me to find the reverence and awe I held as a child. Make me understand this power to move a mountain.

Thank you for the victory over sin and death so I can live my life to the full.

Discuss and Pray

  • Do you believe that Jesus was in error when He tells us we must change and become like children?

  • Jesus tells us that unless anyone receives the kingdom of God like children will never enter it. We also know that Jesus tells us that if we simply believe in Him that salvation for our afterlife is secure. Does Jesus here mean that we can never experience the kingdom of heaven in this life if we don’t receive it with the awe of children?

  • Do you believe that the “real world” scars and lessons prevent us from finding and returning to that original awe that you held as a child?

  • Is Jesus taunting us to have more faith so we can move mountains, or is He assuring us that we have enough already?

  • How can the full-time gift of the Holy Spirit help you manage your life, find the awe of a child, and help you with your most impossible tasks?

  • How has Christ’s victory over sin and death changed you, or will change you?
